Should I keep it? What happens if I do? Surely someone will notice? Though its a council, so chaos always rules...

Put it into an account where it will produce interest, and wait for Accounting to ask you to refund the overpayment.

If that does not come, obviously they don't need the money, and you got the core of a savings nest egg ; if it does, you'll have gained a little money before you had to refund it.

And yes, recheck if it's not really due as a severance package, paid leave provision or something.

if they can show that you knew that you had been overpaid it will be classed as theft and they could take criminal proceedings against you.
Contact them, it will show up in their audits and even if you haven't realised they can and will ask for it back. You never know it could be outstanding money that they owe you, then you can spend it!
Also remember these people will be writing your references for a while

it could be holiday pay due for months you worked and didn't use the holiday entitlement or did you do any weeks in lieu ,normally payments after finishing work can be higher ,so maybe they didnt over pay you ,if they have and moan at you about keeping it claim thats what you thought it was :)

I would put it on deposit - it may be your pension fund refunded to you or something like that. I have found that if you point things out like that they get shirty as you are saying the pay clerk is wrong

If they ask you for it back, you will have to oblige.
If not, then you're very lucky, for their accountants should always pick such things up & notice them.

If you're an honourable person you'd tell them and if necessary refund it. Any other approach is theft.

Seriously - if you keep it then DON'T spend it at once cos if they do ask for it back you could be stuck. You don't have rights to it.

Do not be tempted to keep it, when they find out you will be exposed as deceiptful, tell the wages department.
