Get a strong antenna for the access point and a good receiver for the in-laws computer.

I currently go between 500-600 feet with a 7dbi antenna at my router and a directional antenna at a computer down the street.

Have a look at D-Links Product page for antenna's for some examples. (But you don't have to go with D-Link.)

I spent $80 for a range booster and it was the best $80 I ever spent.

(PS: it still gets interfered by microwave oven, remote cameras etc in the same range, for cleaner internet session, make sure these sources are nil)

i have my wireless set up to reach about half of that distance with a wireless router with parabolic antennas on the router, and a range extender. you might have to have two range extenders. but what you might try is to use parabolic antennas on the router the range extender and on the wireless card on the computer. the range extender should be set up toward the end of the signal range. the problem you are going to run into is the range extenders need power and shelter.

You might want to look up WiFi antennae that transmit WiFi through funnel can.

I am not sure if it strong enough to reach 520 feets. :(
