Maybe not in the north or west but if you come down to the south you will find there are few who say they are both liberal and Democrats. When I was growing up there were mostly conservatives. Conservative Democrats and Conservative Republicans. The big difference was where they wanted the money the Federal government spent controlled. Democrats wanted everything controlled from DC. Republicans wanted it controlled at lower levels.

There are liberals in both parties these days. Not as many in the Republican party as there are in the Democratic. Fact is the southern Democrats are still mostly conservative. that is conservative first, Democrat second. The southern Democrats feel their party has been hijacked by them Damn Liberal Yankees.
They may not like Republicans that much but they definitly DON'T like them Damn Liberal Yankees.

Which would explain why what used to be the solid south for Democrats is a thing of the past. Look at two states in particular. Arkansas and Tennessee. IF Al Gore had managed to carry either of those states Bush would have lost in 2000. Both of these states still have a heavy Democrat majority over all. But they haven't voted for a Democrat for president since Clinton. Like I said they are Conservative first, democrat second.

The Democrat national candidate will have a hard time in the south if they are preceived to be liberal. I don't make the rules. I just tell them like they are. If the liberals don't understand the facts of life --It's not my fault. I try to tell them. You can be liberal and win in the south. But you can't talk like a liberal in the south and win.

Of course. All Democrats are clearly not liberals. There are many moderates in both the Democratic and Republican parties. That fact tends to get lost in the verbal sparring between them. Anyone who doesn't agree with Bush ends up being called a liberal. Anyone who thinks Bush is doing a good job is a neo-con lemming. Though many make it black and white, there is a grey area. Moderates and Independents handed Congress to the Democrats and I think that moderates and Independents will decide the Presidential election as well.

Liberals don't.
