The original Chinese film was far superior. Did Academy voters simply ignore the original; and voted best editing, adapted screenplay, Director and Picture to as remake by accident?

I think it was more about a great director never having one. I mean, he didn't even win for Raging Bull and I don't think he was even nominated for Taxi Driver! Internal Affairs might have been a better movie overall....but it was just time for Scorsese to win.

The original has no bearing on the remake. Everyone knows that it was adapted from an original work (hence the Oscar for best Adapted work). It was a really good film on it's own merits.

Em is just so right. Does anyone believe that, eg, Rocky was better than Taxi Driver or Ordinary People better than Raging Bull, or for that matter that Marty should have started that unhealthy relationship with neveranactor Leo?

This was another of those disguised lifetime awards.

You must remember - America has no memory, and we certainly dont want to give props to those that deserve it!!

I agree with you. If you enjoyed that movie, please see "Blind Shaft" - it is my favorite Chinese movie.
