Because there is so much at stake, and both sides feel that their point of view is right and justified, and that whatever it takes to win is justified to prevent the country from going to hell in a handbasket.
Political scientists have studied this, and found that, while everyone says that they hate it, mudslinging attacks on opponents sway voters more than informatory ones. I hope that the practice changes - maybe Obama will set a tone that can change this attitude. I certainly hope so.

Right now, it's mainly over the war. But I think that deep down, some Democrats were glad to see the whole "moral values" Republican thing take a dump right before the mid-term elections. I know many of us (and I'm an Independent) were heartily sick of the Republicans who maintained a false sense of moral superiority over their opponents. They completely lost that claim in the last 2 years and while Democrats were happy to see it, the Republicans are still smarting over it. I think that sets the bitter tone of many exchanges between them.

The bitterness is promulgated by the media and the political architects of BOTH parties. Bitter rivalry and deep division is the only way to keep the citizenry under control. A moderate, middle of the road party, which a majority of the nation could agree on, would not be good for the GOVERNMENT. Remember, "divided, we fall". I suggest a careful reading of "Animal Farm" by George Orwell.

Before there was Yahoo answers, there were the message boards related to each news story. Yahoo shut them down because of trolls.
Apparently, a number of them have taken up residence here.
Frankly, I think the debate here is generally healthy, save when there are insults.

I don't hate anyone. I'm a moderate and I have friends in all parties. Maybe, you mean the extremes in each party, because the rest of us seem to get along.

Those who hurl insults are a vocal minority. They are driven by hate. They hate due to fear.
