when I turn the key to the start position, nothing happens and then when I bring it back a little it bumps, then forward and back it bumps and then sometimes turns over normal, the BRAKE light in the dash comes on. could this be the starter or the ignition box on the column going bad? 75 chevy truck

Most likely it is the actual ignition switch causing your problem. I think your correct that it is located on the lower steering column on your vehicle. You can verify that it is bad by connecting an volt or ohm meter to it while turning the key to see if it is making the correct contact. In the past I have been able to take the switch apart and clean it to fix these types of problems.

It has the symptoms of the electrical portion of the ignition switch is failing. Remove the column covers, and remove the electrical section by removing the screws and unplugging from the wiring harness.
