This all to often the case with research intuitions such as major State universities such as in California with the University of California or UC system. Especially at UCLA it appears that professors in the sciences, math, and virtual any other major believes (for some strange reason) that they should limit or even destroy student's dreams to become scientists, doctors, or even destroy their dreams of receiving a degree (period) because they lack whatever they think their students lack.
Frankly, the U.S. universities should spend time trying to HELP students become better students, help them retrieve complex information, and help students become better people. It appears that mainly those who are well off to begin with graduate from colleges....THUS EXPLANING why Latinos and Blacks seem to do so poorly at college.
Professors are just jealous half of the time when they see people with good ideas...because professors are not regulated and have that stupid tenure...they can virtually do whatever they want. It’s sad and this issue should be addressed to the mass public for social change at these institutions.

I'm a college professor, and I really care. All my colleagues at my school care, too. My college is a teaching college, not a research college, so all the profs here specifically want to teach, and if they do research, they do research on the side, not the other way around.
I love learning about how students learn, and one of the things I've learned (that not all professors have, sadly) is that people learn best by doing, not by listening. One of my favorite quotes: "The information goes from the notes of the professor to the notes of the student, without going through the minds of either." Student's minds are not empty vessels we can fill with knowledge (if only it were that easy!). Any professor who cares about their students' learning will want the students to be able to think!

I am so disappointed to see such negative comments on University profs. I am a T.A. for a Canadian university and I REALLY care. That's why I do what I do.
I guess, though, that teachers, profs and everyone in the Educational field are, quite simply, human. As you go through life some people are great, some people are jerks and some people are simply self-absorbed.
Usually the best thing to do before entering an Educational institution is do your homework and get your hands on any material you can where the students actually rate the professors. Sometimes this gives you a real "heads-up" on the universities to steer clear of.

Professors should care, but some don't care about anything except their pensions and their sex life.
In many cases, you can learn as much from a book as you can by going to class.
By the way, if the teaching is so crappy these days, why is the tuition is high?

there are some prof. who really cares about their students and plus they give them extra time after class or during their office hours. but there are also manyyyyyy prof who just don't seem to care. They teach their class as they are addressing to only 1 student instead of whole class and some prof are way off their subject like i have a english prof and all he talks about is politicis i mean c'mmon wat is that have to do with the class discussion???? he spends the whole class talking about politics he just don't care if learn something or not

The majority of my professors were very good teachers and cared about what we learned.
I tried to do the same when I was teaching.

Luckily so far, my professors have actually cared and encourage questions or to come to their office hours if you need help.
