The only way to tell for sure is to see it happening. Are you asking because you're seeing someone mistreat an animal? Is an animal being neglected or beaten or otherwise mistreated?

If you could post some specifics it might be easier to help.

The Latham Foundation publishes works on the human-animal bond and occassionally something about animal abuse: http://www.latham.org/FocusArea/focus_statement.html

The Humane Society of the US publishes information on animal maltreatment: http://www.hsus.org/

This site has a question about what to do if an animal is being mistreated- it may be slightly different depending on the laws where you live: http://www.co.caldwell.nc.us/depart/animal/faqs.html

the animal would most likely never be outside often, or outside 24/7. He will be skinny and maybe roughed. If you go near him, some will start being mean because their owners have been treating them bad and are afraid of anyone else. They will have bruises and scars from a time ago. If you see one abused help them right away! If the animal is permanently damaged, he might never find a home. Wich means he will be put under, and I hope you don't want this to happen.

The ASPCA would be very helpful as would the Humane Society, abused animals may exhibit differnt behaviors than would be expected as the norm, and will be very "skittish" and crouch down as if expecting the blow when you come at them in a way that feels threatening

I dont think of there extremely is something you're able to do if teh SPCA wont do something approximately it. sure im effective it is abuse! some human beings have issues in basic terms like murderers. no one extremely is conscious why they do it, yet curiously they get some sort of ill exhilaration from it. once you call the SPCA do you clarify what you notice? in case you do and that they nonetheless dont have confidence then you definately why don't you attempt shooting or recrding what you notice in case you are able to.

The question here is. Do you suspect animal abuse? If so please contact your local animal control officer and report you concerns. Remember animals can't defend themselves. Every dog/cat should have their day.

Thanks for showing your concern and I hope you take all advise offered and use it to benifit an abused animal.

Well, normally any abused pet would normally be "jumpy" for sudden movements you do and also with objects normally housewifes manage daily like bromms and stuf. If you find scars we're talking about a very serious case.

They will be timid and jumpy. They may have a fear of feet if they have been kicked.
