take two apples, three lemons and small box. apples are in the offense. place one apple to the right of the three lemons and one to the left and the box to the left of the left apple. tell him, if the right apple passes the ball to the left apple at this point, then its offside. then move the left apple to the right of the lemon closest to the box, tell him, now if the right apple passes to left apple, it's not offside. demonstrate with several more positions in that fashion, and pick one where the left apple is in line with the last lemon. also show him two apples that are both closer to the box than all the lemons, but the apple closer to the box backpasses to the other apple. a backpass is not offside either.
Also show him that if the apple is making a free throw, the other apple can be where it pleases, it's not offisde.

In short - make a ball game out of it :)

I have a 10 year old who plays club soccer and even the parents get confused on this. I just started understanding after years of watching my children play soccer. Good luck on explaining it, but I think the first two answers on here are great, so instead of just rewording the same thing, I am gonna suggest that you combine what they said and tell your cousin just like that. My 10 year old daughter just started understanding it this year. She is a forward, so it is important for her to understand where to be on the field so the ref doesn't call offsides on her. Good Luck. :)

Consider the last defender as forming an imaginary line across the field you can cross that line safely if you have the ball or if you run after a ball that is thrown beyond that line.
If you are ON the line or beyond that line at the moment of a pass, a free kick or a corner kick then you are considered offside.
this is the simplest way for a 10 years old.

the last player of the attacking team has to be in line with the defense of the defending team when a ball is played through to him. its just a way to stop players goal mooching/hanging just waiting for a pass. Otherwise all that will be played is longballs and no attractive , attacking football. Defenders practise their line for ages to catch players offside! Hope it helps your cuz...

a player is considered offside when he is in a position to affect play eg. score a goal or obstruct the goalie. the player must be in the opponets half and infront of the last defender at the exact time the ball is played.
