That happens to me all the time. But then again I am a lawyer, and thus stuck talking to ego-maniacs all day. Try manipulating the conversation to get them to admint something really really embarassing about themselves, then say, well no, that never happens to me, and turn around and walk away, leaving them red faced in the courtroom or wherever...

This is a true way of telling just how self centered some people are. Try saying something really shocking in normal conversation and see if they hear you,failing that ask them a question about themselves that they will not have a clue what you are talking about.(Just for self satisfaction.)
