The source of air (or atmosphere) is believed to be "outgassing" caused by the formation of our planet. Gasses were expelled from the hot molten core of the earth. As the planet evolved, developed plant (plants use carbon dioxide to form oxygen), animal (animals and humans form gasses called methane) and human life (decomposition forms other types of gasses), various gases (our equipment and machinery form gasses like carbon monoxide) were and are formed. Gravity has kept much of this atmosphere close to and around the planet. Warm and cold patches formed by solar heat reaching our planet at various angles (tilt of the earths' axis has been calculated at between 21 and 23 degrees) creates our seasons. These cold and warm patches cause high and low pressure points and therefore causes air flow (wind).
Two permanent gases form 99% of our atmosphere. They are nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%) Other permanent gases found in our atmosphere are: argon, neon, helium, krypton and hydrogen. Variable gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone.
Here is a website that has some interesting theories on the origin of the air around our planet: http://www.met.fsu.edu/explores/atmcomp.html
Hope this helps, good luck.

Oxygen, nitrogen, and other gases are released from the earth. Due to gravity, these cannot escape completely from the earth. Based on the relative weight of these gases, some is closer to the earth than others. This makes a thick blanket of air, called the atmosphere.
