bad move, and why does everyone insist that Turner is a "Great" Offensive coordinator.
Since he left Dallas following the 1993 season, these are the ranks that his offenses have produced
1994 Redskins - 13th
1995 Redskins - 18th
1996 Redskins - 8th
1997 Redskins - 15th
1998 Redskins - 17th
1999 Redskins - 2nd
2000 Redskins - 24th
2001 Chargers - 15th
2002 Dolphins - 15th
2003 Dolphins - 24th
2004 Raiders - 18th
2005 Raiders - 23rd
2006 49ers - 26th
Only twice in the top 12 in 13 years? How could this man possibly be a "great" offensive coordinator?

Norv Turner has proved through the years that he is not a good head coach. As an offensive coordinator, he has done an amazing job and did a great job last year with the 49ers. The Chargers should not have hired Turner as a head coach OR offensive coordinator because, last time i checked, the chargers offense was slightly incredible last year. What the chargers needed was a coach that could bring leadership and confidence when it's most needed, playoff time. Turner is not that man.

The decision to hire Norv Turner had more to do with the Coordinator position than anything else. As soon as Marty was fired they were going to have to hire Norv. You have to look at this question 1st: Why was Marty fired in the 1st place? The answer is because all of the Bolts coaches walked (LB's coach to SF, TE coach to Cle, OCord to Mia, DCord to Dal) so with only 1 year left on his contract Marty wasn't going to be able to hire anyone considered to be top tier coaches. So when you look at what's out there (considering that San Diego's GM AJ Smith wanted to keep his 3-4 defensive scheme) there were a ton of great defensive football coaches available. Norv Turner was the only offensive coach even interviewed for the opening. Who was going to be the offensive mastermind if we hired one of the defensive coaches though? Norv couldnt leave SF to be their coordinator (NFL coaching rules prohibit lateral moves by coordinators) so they put him as head coach and hired one of "AJ's guys" in Ted Cotrell to run the defense. So it wasn't that Norv Turner was the best head coach available it was the fact that Norv Turner gave the Chargers the most well-rounded coaching staff. They even ended up getting highly touted ex-Bears DCoord Ron Rivera as their LB's coach)
Also note that Norv Turner was the one who installed the Charger's offense a few years back that they have been running ever since.

It was a safe decision by the Chargers. Norv is the one who put their current offense in place....not much has changed after he left. This offensive ran very well last year.
Offensively they will be a good team.....Norv as a head coach is the only true risk!
Look for the Chargers to make it to the playoffs next year but they will not make it to the Superbowl. The new coaching staff will be their demise. -Playbookcritic

I completely agree. As a non secular Oakland Raiders fan, i comprehend for a fact that Norv Turner is a foul coach. the ingredient is, nonetheless, San Diego is notably proficient, and their branch sucks worse then the different branch. in the event that they have been interior the AFC South, or the NFC East, there's no way they also have a winning checklist much less a playoff berth. They have been so fortunate to attraction to the susceptible Tennessee Titans interior the 1st around. I say Indianapolis places hem of their spot this week. i don't have something against the Chargers, yet hiring Norv Turner grow to be a terrible call, and that i sort of desire the Chargers to pay for it.

I'm behind the decision. Calling plays as HC means that our OC and former RB coach won't be, which allows him to focus more on our great RB core(plus he's an unproven play-caller ----and w/Norv Phillip Rivers will likely develop even faster and better than he already has). Also, Norv has never had the talent in a roster that he does here as a HC. Also, some say he isn't a great motivator --but 1)we've got plenty of players who are (ex: Shawne Merriman gives great pre-game speaches) and 2)Cotrell, Shelmon, and Rivera are all good motivators --it doens't have to be the HC.

It worries me just a bit due to his bad head coach record. But overall I think the Chargers will be fine because they have such a great team, that includes guys like LT, Merriman, Jamal Williams. Just need to get a good receiver. We'll see how the season goes.

I think it was a risky one. He is known for being a great offensive coordinator but just a mediocre head coach. I think that should have went with someone else for the head coaching job and just hired him in as a offensive coordinator.

If Barry Switzer was OK enough his team could carry him to a SB, then Norv has no excuses.
