Her Outlook Express works for both send and receive, but she cannot get into IE any which way. Diagnostic check says all is well with connection. Have tried everything listed. The LAN linked router has an IP which ends in .10 which 'Network Diagnostics' passed, but the default gateway is identical but without the final '0' and any reference in the list to this is shown as 'failed'. Her virus program says it is updating ok so why can't IE be accessed. 'System restore to a time before collapse hasn't solved the problem. Virus scan says her computer XP home edition is clean.

I'm puzzled. I am getting answers now to several questions I asked years ago. My wife has had a new laptop with Windows 7 for two years. The first answer from Vex was posted 8 years ago as you can see. What's going wrong with Yahoo Answers?
Thank you to all who submitted answers both 8 years ago and recently.

update #1
Switch the router off from the main socket, just switch the power off basically, then wait a while and restart it, that seems to fix all of my internet problems when i have them, just switch it off for 1 min and turn it on again, wait for the lights to settle down and try using the internet again!!

Hello,
(ANS) You need to be abit carefull here? why? because both IE and OutLook Express share the same security settings. So making changes from control panel, internet options affecst BOTH programs.
QTN to you, so have either of you changed the security settings of either IE or OE? This might account for part of the problem.
The router with an IP ending in 10 is fine (OK)
The DF with an IP of zero is fine (OK).
**Another REALLY DUMB question here, but have you checked to ensure that IE browser hasnt been set to OFF LINE?? mode.

Try Reinstalling Windows XP as that resets alot of the junk in windows that causes problems you briefly mentioned a "collapse?" could help a little if u elaborated on that a little more.
also when i say Reinstall windows xp don't do a clean install unless you have backed up all your docs & faves that you want to keep, i would suggest just installing windows over itself you know what i mean like an update it saves having to wipe every thing.
Also get windows XP Pro if you can alot less hassle i have with XP pro than Home.
Another thing you might try before reinstalling XP is to to go to (Internet protocol TCP/IP properties) & set both settings to "Obtain IP/DNS automaticly" if they arent already.
It wont be verry good for Outlook or P2P apps like emule or bit torrent but it will work if both PC's are are set up this way to begin with, if it dont try reinstalling XP not a complete format & reinstall!
thats all i can say without actuly being there & getting stuck in sorry.
another thing are both computers Seeing each other?
if you want apps like Bit torrent & emule to run you will need an app called "PFConfig" Port forword config for forwording your IP through router, you can do this manually but it is so boaring.

It would really help if you posted the error you get when trying to access the Internet. Also, what error do you get when yo open IE and type an address in to the address menu and press enter.
My guess is IE is offline or spyware is playing the old "Page Cannot be Displayed" trick on you.

Question ... How do you know you are online ?
If you mean you have a valid IP address, that means you are connected to the router.
Have you tried powering off the router and then on again? That often cures connection issues.

The fact that her email works fine, it's not her Gateway that is faulty, cause that would stop her mail working as well.
I would say you have a Spyware that kidnapped your browser.
Try using something like Spybot, you can download it from another PC and also download the current updates , install it on her PC and run it to clean Spyware and Trojans.
If you have a good Antivirus, run it's update, Reboot in safe mode (using F8) and run the Antivirus in Safe Mode to allow it to clean peoperly.

Are you using a wireless router?
You need a WEP to access the wireless router by taking down that numbers on the wireless router.
There shouldn't be any problem with the internet unless the service is disrupted.

try to reinstall ie or try to install a different browser like firefox or netscape and see if you have the same problem. If not then u know it is ie. if it doesn't work then u should try to access internet w/o the router and go from there.
