Classification is how we put living things together. This helps us understand what living things do what things, how we think they are related to other living things in the same classes, and how those living things might interact with other living things from other classes.

Nomenclature is how we name living things. We follow a standard system of naming living things so that we always know what they are, and where they fit on their own family trees, and the like.

For example:
Modern humans are called "Homo sapiens," which means "Smart people." Some of our ancestors were called "Homo sapiens neandertalensis," which means "Smart neanderthal people," others were called "Homo habilus," which means "tool making people." Do you notice how all of them start with the word "Homo?" That means that all of those creatures are considered people, even though we looked and behaved very different. "Homo" is the genus - it's part of the classification system that we use to put living things together. Sapiens, habilus, whatever - those are the species, so that we know which one of the Homo genus members we're talking about.
