The answer cuts both ways. It could also very well define your economic beliefs as well.

If you live under the limited (in scope and wisdom) liberal view of economics, then you believe that in order for a person to get rich, one has to go poor or hungry down the road somewhere. That's ridiculous.

The more accepted and conventional theory on the other hand suggests that there's enough room for us all. Purchase a yacht, create jobs in New England for the yacht industry. Purchase a 2nd home, create jobs for builders which in turn encourages stimulation of the economy, which subsequently encourages the Fed to hold rates down, oftentimes benefitting less advantaged first time home buyers moreso than the rich who could always afford a mortgage at a minimally higher rate.

Always, always, always we are to help out the disadvantaged. The rich will always benefit as does the poor, because as long as the rich give away portions of income the Government is more inclined to keep their hands off sizable portions of the rich persons income.

In the conservative model, see everyone benefits, whereas under the more liberal and limited construct, someone always loses. Sad indeed.

The second home. Not only will you have a nice getaway, you will be helping to support another economy with the taxes you pay on the property and services used by the local community. Yachts are nothing but a hole in the water that you throw money into. If you can afford the second home or yacht you are donating quite a bit to society already.

This is one of those Dems love the average folks and Repubs have yachts. Well, several million Dems voted for George W. Bush TWICE becaus the Dem candidates were pitiful. And in the past election W was a piker with Kerry having personal wealth of 463 million dollars (mostly through his wife/widow of a conservative Republican Senator). That was the "every man" that the Dems decided was the friend of the little folks. Didn't see Theresa Heinz Kerry giving back any of her tax breaks, or not outsourcing overseas.. Run someone better this time or we will have a Republican President again.

It's a moot point. Whatever you elect to do, it will be done to please yourself.

If you elect to "help" society, it is because that is the choice that gives YOU the most pleasure...... Ditto for any other choice that you make.

All choices are, ultimately, selfish in nature. There's no true altruism. At the same time, since you do have more than one option to choose from - it is your right (In America) to choose what you wish and should not be faulted for your decision. Fellow Americans should respect what you decide and keep their opinions to themselves.

Unless, as in this case, they are asked for their input...... and take the bait........................

You should do what you believe you should do.

Whatever you do, it is not up to me to judge. I believe you earned your money, and the right to follow your own conscience in spending it. And you stimulate the economy with a purchase of a new home or yacht. And you have a tax deduction for charitable giving. It's your life. Enjoy it.

By buying that second home or yacht, you ARE helping society. You are stimulating growth and economic activity, which helps all people.

It's your money, do what you want with it. I've never met a liberal that chose to spend their extra money to "help society." That's not to say that liberals don't advocate taking money from others to "help society." It's a fact that conservatives donate more of their own money to charity than liberals.
