Culturally speaking, no. One does not have to know where they've been to know where they are going.

Everything comes from somewhere, so I do believe that moving forward requires understanding where we are moving from.
You will find that the greatest scientists of today are familiar with the work Galileo and Newton did centuries ago.
The most innovative musicians have listened to rock-and-roll from the 1950s and blues music recorded back in the 1920s.
The most creative of our artists can speak with authority about Leonardo and Michelangelo.
And the wisest of our political leaders (yes, there are some) have a firm grasp of history.

I truly believe that those whose actions are informed by the past will make the greatest contribution to our future.

Yes, else you will forget lessons you learned during the climb, not to mention the meaning and point of the climb to start with. Would someone who was climbing Mount Everest not care where base camp was after they left?

EDIT: If you don't know where you've come from, only where you are going, how do you know you should go to your destination? If you haven't seen it, you should watch "Memento" as it answers this question quite potently. Not to mention the infamous quote "Those of forget the past are doomed to repeat it".

i think so, you need to know history so you dont fall under the same mistakes as previous people have
