I believe the best thing you can do for any child is to show them real life examples of people like them who became great. You must give them something/someone to aspire to be. Do some research and come up with people of different races who grew up in poverty and overcame it and achieved success. Show all professions, not just athletes or performing artists, but doctors, judges, lawyers, government officials, etc, etc. The list goes on. There are so many people who rise above the restrictions placed upon them by uncontrollable circumstances. Show these children that with heart, self-discipline, and self-confidence, they do not have to be a prisoner of the 'hood'. They may have odds against them, but they also have things in their favor. Unlike many kids that grow up being handed things much too easily, these children know what it is to be survivors. They have often times learned how to rely on themself and no one else. In the long run, they can put that to use and excel in the business world or whatever they so choose. Tell them to set a goal for their future and write down the steps needed to achieve it. Encourage them to let nothing and no one stand in their way and not to participate in anything that could jeopardize their goals (such as gangs, drug-use, or even hanging out with people who are going nowhere in life). When given examples and encouragement, they will see that life can be better and that they are in control of their own destiny.

words are powerful, but more so when combined with action, be a positive role model for your child, show them the beauty and wonder of the world we live in, make sure they always feel loved , encourage them to have dreams and show them that they can make a difference to the world we live in
