...not quite sure what you mean by authority..

when children are in school, it's the school's responsibility to ensure the children are educated, kept safe and don't feel bullied etc. and teachers should alert principal, parents or ? if they notice any children look abused etc.

as far as discipline - a parent should find out what discipline the school considers for misbehaving children : is it a time out, or ???

when I went to school - many many many years ago - I got the cane across my hand for talking to a workman out in the playground....

now teachers have to cope with guns and violence.... so different from when I went to school

not sure if this is the info. you are looking for ??

Schools always used to have absolute authority over children. When I went to school, (even before the donkey was born), children had absolute respect for teachers - what they said went. No question. We had the cane and the strap for misbehaviour. We had discipline in schools.
In today's PC climate even the parents, let alone the teachers, are not allowed to upset the the little darlings.
The responsibility lies with:-
1. The parents. They don't teach respect.
2. The government for taking away the right of the school to chastise an unruly child in a way they see fit.
Parents put their children in the care of the teachers when their little ones go to school. They should know that, just like at home, their kids are safe.
It is not happening. But school or government? I will let someone else answer that bit. It is too political for me.....

I am a young mum and totally agree that there is not enough dicipline in these schools. UNLESS they are Private paying schools where parents pay 6 thousand pounds a year!

My son goes to a schol where they dont believe in dicipliine for bullying, yet I have seen labeling of children, where the "naughty kids" get taken to headteachers office but the other little ones get away with it all the time.
I dont know about caining as I was never there at that time, but it could be worth a try to bring caining back!

Yes, but at the same time, schools are asserting their authority over children when they are not in school. Which is crap. When I graduated in 2004 kids were being punished for things they did over the weekend... WHEN NOT AT SCHOOL! The schools are trying to be more parents and take decisions out of parent’s hands. And if you don’t believe me, there are schools in new jersey that are testing kids on Mondays to see if they have drank in the past 80 hours... obviously while not at school.
As for kids being disrespectful, mean, and rude, I say parents are to blame. Parenting has hit an all time low, in my opinion. It sickens me that a lot of parents seem to want the Gov.t to take care of things for them.

Hell yes! school kids now adays are the rudest little shites and i wouldn't be a teacher for all the tea in china.
Kids today are way smarter than when i was at school and boy do they know their rights, teachers have a right to do their job without the risk of some smug little sod bashing them over the head or sticking a knife in them.
9 out of 10 tens wouldn't behave like a thug at home so why it in school.
Bring back the cane i say, a good hard smack on their pampered arses would do them the world of good

They definitely should. Our kids are with them for 8 or more hours a day....if they act up, are rude, mean, the teachers should have the right to discipline them as they see fit!!!
