First off, somebody's way off when they said CAGED was 70% of guitar playing. Appearantly they are just what I call Strummers. Get yourself a book of chords and learn them, not just CAGED, learn B, F also since they are used quite frequently. Learn minors of each one also. They are very important! Learn how to make barre cords! Last but not least, learn a couple of 7ths and 9ths. You will not used diminished chords too often, so I would skip those.
Once you learn those, use them to play along with songs. Just strum for the time being. Later on, you will want to learn scales, modes and soloing. For now though, learn those chords, and practice them enough that you can make them quickly.

It takes alot of studying and practicing to learn all the chords, but once you do, the sky's the limit. It will help you when you decide to learn to solo, because you will know alot more about where each note is on the neck.
