I'm with you, emo's are definitely newer than goths (in a historical sense, Goths have been around since about the 5th century...).
I can't see why so many people answering this question have a problem with them; let them do what they want to do; would you want other people telling you that you should conform and be 'normal' instead of being allowed to be yourself?
I'm not surprised they're messed up (if they actually are, most goths I've met are pretty cheerful) with all the negativity they get from others cos of the way they dress and what they listen to, it'd piss me off too!

Well, emos and goths are definitely more emotional, therefore can relate better to other people who are going through difficult times. I think they are a lot more compassionate and if 'normal' people would have that kind of compassion towards each other then things would be better.

Considering Goth is a genre that has been around since the late seventies/early eighties it is pretty obvious you are right! Mind you - i can't think of any emos that used to be goths. The genres are completely seperate and don't have anything to do with each other.

ok.firstly,'emo' is a genre of music,it stands for 'emotive hardcore'(or 'emotional',idk).it really annoys me when people get labelled as emos.

but anyways,I don't think either are 'messed up',if people want to walk around wearing black clothes and being depressed (as goths are stereotyped as),then that's fine by me.People don't go on about annoying eight-year-old girls that listen to Hilary Duff and wear a tonne of make up after all..
