The response from Martin G. is correct, though you will need the power button on the case connected too ... unless you fancy creating a short by touching the two pins that the power button wires connect to with a screwdriver. He is absolutely correct about not requiring the hard drive (or floppy drive) connected.

If you want to listen for the POST beep though, you'll need to connect the internal speaker.

you need to connect 1.the 2 ide cables, one to the hard drive(ide1) and the other to the optical drive(ide2)
then connect the psu(power supply) and the floppy drive(fdd),and also remmeber to connect the cpu fan lead, this will power the fan for the cpu
then attach a graphics card(agp,pci-e) unless you plan to use the onboard graphics
finally insert the correct memory into the banks,256mb ect
its somethimes good in a situation like yours to try to get a spare of each component so you can check each component to see if its ok
also it may be a good idea to download a manual for your motherboard so you can check that all jumpers ,leads and cables are connected correctly and everything is were it should be
i allways do this and it saves you loads of time when you are trying to fix a p.c
also a good idea is to print a visible image of the motherboard so you can have it next to you while working on it
good luck
