When I grew up my dad said your not dating until your 30! Then your not going out in a van, and I'm going to meet your date on the couch in a teddy smoking a cigar and cleaning my gun. Wasn't he just so hilarious....??
I went out on a one on one date when I was 15 with a guy, but I had to be home by 9:15...so It wasn't like we were out a whole long time alone with one another, plus my mom made sure she had met the guy first.

At least 15-16 (with a small group of friends or something) thats how old i was anyway when i started dating. But it depends on how well you know the guy shes going out with. I'd get to know the guy shes gonna go out with first. Good Luck!

I let my daughters start large group dating at 14, small groups at 15 and real dating at 16 so your parents sound about right to me.

16 in groups, 18 for one on one. Before 16 is rediculous and pointless. A girl dates with her emotions and a boy just wants to show his friends how far he gets with whom. A girl under 18 needs to be aware of the games younger boys play or she'll be played.

A lot will depend on your family's definition of "dating". My oldest daughter had a boyfriend at 14. We didn't approve, but we didn't forbid it either. Instead, we set strict guidelines. He was older (a senior to her freshman) and could drive, but she was never allowed to be in the car with him. He could come to our house just about whenever he liked. She could go to their home if a parent was home and we took her and dropped her off. If they were hanging out with friends, than we allowed her to go with a known friend's parents or we would take her and drop her off. Actual "dates" when a boy would come to the house and pick her up in a car were not allowed until she was 16. Our next 2 kids preferred to stay out of the "dating" scene and usually spent time hanging out with groups of friends at our house sometimes or we'd let them go to another home if we knew a parent was going to be there (and YES, we did always call and check much to the horror of our kids). They also preferred going to the mall or movies with a group of friends that always included both boys and girls. I'm an old-fashioned type mom, though. Our youngest is only 9 and right now she still thinks it's "yucky" to have much to do with boys. She says they are gross and silly.

every child is different but 16 is a good age. It really depends on maturity. Don't feel forced to allow it if you do not see ur child as ready. Talk to ur kids and find out what the goal is, etc.
