The only legitimate publishers I know of that will accept books from authors rather than agents are romance novel publishers.
I'm a published author and still need to have my agent handle sales - which is good because an agent knows how to negotiate a good deal.
If you go with a POD (print-on-demand) publisher, the only honest one I know of is Fort Orange Press in Albany, NY

Well, now, interesting.
There are several ways to do that.
On demand publishing is the easiest.
You can go to:
http://www.hunterentertainment.net/
Click on the Interesting Links link.
Click on the Lulu link and use one of there options to publish
your work.
Or search for a literary agent and submit to them.
Be sure that your work has a copyright. This is for your
protection.
you can find a link to the Copyright Office on the Links page
of the above website.

Go to lulu.com and have your stories published through them with an ISBN number. That way people can even buy your books through Amazon. It is a way to get started.
