When people donate their blood, is the blood sold to people who need it? Is their a profit off the donated blood? and why doesent the blood go to the person who needs it for free?

There are costs involved. Blood needs to be screened for infectious disease, typed, processed. Then distributed to blood banks where it is provided to hospitals etc where it is then provided to the patient. There are obvious expenses though the distribution process. Then a nurse needs to place a catheter into the patient and there are expenses associated with hospitalization.
