Simply put, we are a fraternal organization dedicated to improving ourselves and helping others.
If you know what a Mason is, you are familiar with some of the jobs that a Mason might have, as far as building with stone and brick. Masons use certain tools and concepts to do their work. These are called operative Masons.
Freemasonry is also referred to as speculative Masonry, and this is a fraternal organization that (to make things simple), assigns certain ideas or principles to the working tools of operative Masons, and uses these to teach certain moral lessons. Our group is a fraternity based on this concept of conveying intangible ideas through the use of symbolism derived from ancient Masonic teachings.
As an example, Masons use a square to make sure that structures adhere to perfect angles. We may use this to remember to square our actions with others (to deal with people squarely and fairly). Also, an operative Mason uses a level to make sure that something is evenly perpendicular to the ground. Speculative Masons use this to teach that we are all equal and on the level with others.
Those are just a few examples of how Freemasonry and operative masons are related. However, it in not required that Freemasons be operative masons. We are bankers and ditch diggers, waiters and software engineers, preachers and bartenders, and all other occupations.
While it was pretty common for men at the time of the founding of the United States to be Freemasons, not all of the Founding Fathers were brothers. Ben Franklin, George Washington, Paul Revere were members, but John Adams and and others were not. Eight signers of the Declaration of Independence were known Masons. The reason that so many were members is because the Masons believe in freedom and equality, so it stands to reason that men of such belief would be involved in the creation of our country. It should be mentioned, however, that this political activity was not done as an act of the Masons. In fact, many Masons at the time were also loyal to England.
There are a lot of conspiracy theories about the Freemasons out there, and many outrageous claims that we are Satanists or that we rule the country. First, how could an organization that gives about $2 million dollars A DAY to charity be an evil organization. Second, we are forbidden to discuss politics in our lodge meetings, so it would be pretty difficult to run a country while not speaking of politics.
Also note that all of these crackpot accusations about the Masons are made by non-Masons, so they really wouldn't know what they are talking about, would they.

Freemasonry is an oath bound fraternal order of men which derives from the medieval fraternity of Freemasonry. We adhere to many of the Ancient Charges, laws customs and legends of operative Freemasonry. We are loyal to the civilian government under which we exist. We inculcate moral and social virtues by symbolic application of the operative stonemasons' working tools and by allegories, lectures and and charges. Freemasonry obligates its members to obey the principles of brotherly love, equality mutual aid secrecy and confidence. We have secret modes of recognition which permit members to recognize each other as brothers. We require a through examination into the mental, moral and physical qualifications of a petitioner and we admit men into the fraternity by secret ceremonies based in part on legends of the Craft.
Once a person has decided to apply for membership he fills out a petition signed by 2 members of the Lodge he desires to join. He gives the petition to one of the members along with the required initiation fee. The petition is read at the Lodges next stated meeting when the Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committee who will interview the petitioner in person. The investigating committee will report back to Lodge at the following stated meeting when the members present will vote on the petitioner. Once accepted the candidate will receive the three degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. There are certain requirements which must be met before the candidate can proceed from one degree to the next.
One must receive the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason before he can wear any Masonic jewelry. One must have a Belief in a Supreme Being and the HOLY BOOKS play an important part in all Masonic Rituals, Ceremonies and Activities. The Tenets of the Masonic Fraternity are " Brotherly Love Relief and Truth. " The Masonic Fraternity is not a Secret Society but Rather Society with Secrets like many other Fraternal Organizations. No matter what you have heard the Masonic Fraternity is NOT Satanic in nature.
Suggest if you are interested in pursuing interest in the Masonic Fraternity and are over 18 years of age you contact a man whom you know to be a Mason for further information and an application. If under 18 you can inquire about the DeMolay Organization.
If no local Masonic Lodge is available then suggest contacting the Grand Lodge of Masons for the State in which you reside. The Grand Lodge Brothers will be more than glad to assist you in any way possible.

Freemasons is a fraternal order dedicated to making good men better. It was a secret organization until around 1725, since then it has been considered a social group with some secrets.
You will never be invited to become a Mason as you have to find a Mason and petition or ask to join.
