There are lots of ignorant people out there who continue to perpetuate stereotypes. Those who hold these ideals probably believe what they see in movies; little do they know, tv is not reality! As long as you have people believing what they see on the big screen (or hear....for that matter), then they won't be concerned with finding out the TRUTH for themselves.

I can't say it gets on my nerves, because I didn't realize people think like that. I suppose that there are some people who are ignorant enough to think like that, but I think the majority of people know better. Now, with that said, If I wanted to go on a safari, Africa would be choice, but that doesn't mean I think the whole country is full of lions and tigers and bears!! OH MY!!!

I think you need to calm down. I also think you need to educate yourself a bit more, before going off on a tangent. Most people, myself included do not think of Afrcia as lions and zebras and naked people. I think of AIDS epidemics, I think of the Congo and what those people have lived through, I think of the underfed children that desperatly need help, I think of Governments that are either corupt or are good but weak and need assistance. I think a LOT of things, none of which you have mentioned. Maybe that is all you can think of, but most of us are a bit more educated and put a lot more thought into our opinions and views.

I agree. I have not visited yet but a class mate does volunteer work and sent us these beautiful pics from there. The media only shows and puts in our mind only the negative. The comedian Jamie Foxx also commented in one of tours about how beautiful it was over there and how it was very sad that America has been misinformed about Africa.

The crime rate in my opinion is no more than what we see here in America. We have been given only the negative snapshots of Africa and not the beauty of it. That can be said from one side of town in America to the next side of town.

I have not been but can't wait to go in the near future. I would love to experience visiting THE MOTHERLAND.

Go to some other areas and you will see what is left of the lions and zebras (endangered) but there are still plenty of half naked people killing each other. You just need to get around more.

well a lot of africa is llike that, but some of africa is not. I was surprised when I went there and found large cities. funny how we imagine africa before we go there. Don't get mad though. How do we know until we tell others about it.

its just a stereotype....they probably saw the lion king and assume its all like that. just like people think that everyone in america is overweight, and we assume that the french give up easily, canada isnt a country, etc. its their ignorance. stereotypes do make me angry but i dont think i have heard the africa one yet. i would think it would frustrate me though. just let them know how it truly is and tell them to stfu and not say anything until they go there.

i think you are over reacting to what maybe only one or two ppl have said. I dont think that it is like that. I work with many ppl who come from africa and they are very much like anyone else form anywhere in the world. They are smart, intelligent human beings who laugh, cry, and like to have fun. dont react like that...you are just reacting the way those ignorant ppl want you to act like.. they just want to get a rise out of you and you gave it to them...now they are laughing.

Well you must be talking about good ol' americans....
Yes we are almost all guilty of doing this at some point in our naive lifespan. You see, the U.S. lives in it's only little McDonald's happy meal box and never breaks free to discover anything else.
We think we are the best and well developed...well TRAVEL and don't go to Hilton's when you travel but really get out there....and you'll see how coold the world really is...

I agree... I visited Tanzania last year. I was blown away by the natural beauty contrasted by modern cities. The people as well were very cultured and friendly. Never once was I afraid of the potential for crime as I am in the USA.
