my printer's on the second floor and i'm on the 4th. my printer and my computer are connected with LAN cables. i turned off the printer on the second floor but i need to print. can i turn off my computer on the 4th floor first, with pending print jobs, then turn on the printer on the second floor to print? i need to turn off the computer first so that i can go out directly after printing.

It depends on the setup. If your printer is network aware and stores the files on its own harddisk, then you can turn off your machine. If the printer is attached to some other machine which acts as the printer queue server, then you can turn off your machine. If the files are stored on your machine and only delivered to the printer as it says it can take more, then you can't turn off your machine. Why don't you set your machine up with a password and logout after starting the print job if security is the risk. If it just convenience, why don't you set the Power settings to shut down your machine after an hour or so.

No. However, I think the wireless printer server can be useful for your problem. You can pick one up for Best Buy for maybe $60 or something similar. It will act like a satillite server for your print jobs.
