I say the hen which is bearer of the egg....the egg could not have come first in that it had to be laid by the hen - which like every other animal including man was created first - with progeny-creating abiities.

Basic evolutionary principles will answer this easily. You had something that was almost a chicken which laid an egg and out of that egg came a mutated version of the parent which so happened to be a chicken. Therefore the egg came before the chicken.
If you believe in creationism then frankly it was all magic and God probably created them both at the same time.

Actually, according to both the Bible and evolutionary theory, the egg is definitely first.
From the Book of Genesis, God commanded the waters to 'bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life', and then afterwards the 'fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven'. He also commanded that these creatures be fruitful and multiply.
Since he created fish first, and fish lay eggs, there were eggs before there were chickens.
Taken from science, there were numerous egg-laying fish, amphibian, reptile and avian ancestors to the chicken that were all laying eggs long before chickens evolved. So eggs definitely came first.
So can we please, please stop asking this stupid question?

Personally, hen first. well, simply because there's no such thing as hen egg without a hen to produce them.
