I'd have to say GOOD WRITERS, and a comedy, romance, lots of action. It really depends on what your'e into.

This question is completely subjective to the age of the person answering this question. I would have answered it differently 10 0years ago , and 20 years ago even different still. but here goes.

The Plot is defiantly what separates a truly great movie from a good entertaining film. All the action and special effects will dazzle you for the moment , and maybe even linger a short time in your memory. But they will soon be replaced by the new coolest scene or stunt ever. A truly good plot however is the story itself that gets the viewer. An original idea , or view point that makes people say wow , never thought about that , and makes them question and wonder far after the movie has long gone from the new release shelf at the video store. For My example I will use a Blockbuster release call " The Gathering " It didn't take great actors to make the story riveting. It didn't take a million dollars in special effects to dazzle the mind with a new and interesting take on an age old story. Rent it today, after you've watched it , call me wrong.

If a movie is truly well done, genre shouldn't matter.
Writing, directing, producing, lighting, costuming, photography, acting, makeup, sound, sound mixing, editing, visual effects. If all of these jobs are done by the best people in their field, working hard as they can for a good product the result will rock! It takes every single element. Some examples are:
War of the Worlds
Last of the Mohicans
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Titanic
Many more of course, these are just the first ones to come to my head.

For me, a great movie is one that scares the crap out of me. Not literally, of course because that would ruin the movie for those around me. I'm a horror movie junkie so I love most movies that make me scream like a 2 year old or where I have to cover my eyes and peek through my fingers.

what makes a good movie for me is one with magic and dragons...
or one with alot of fighting and action. so I like ones like Eragon(though the book was better), Lord of the Rings(book were still better), Star Wars, Alien,Aliens, Predator, Predator2, and AVP(Alien vs. Predator). so thats what I think makes a great movie.
