I got a cleansing bottle at the hospital to use after delivery. Wondering what exactly is that for and how do I properly cleanse down there? Do I lather up with soap first and rinse off with the cleansing bottle, or is using just plain warm water down there sufficient. I'm concerned about having any odors down there and since I'm bleeding and from what I'm told, will be bleeding for several weeks, I want to know what exactly I have to do to avoid having any bad smells down there. So far, I've been showering as I normally did before labor. I use soap down there (I lather up with Dial Antibacterial soap, no wash cloth, I rub soap directly on that area) then I use the cleansing bottle to rinse the soap off really well and I change my pad every 4 hours, but I still feel like it smells gross down there (like old blood I guess). Am I doing something wrong or what else can I do?

God I hated the mess after delivery! The cleansing bottle is for relief of stitches and to wash away the blood. When you go to the bathrrom, fill the bottle with warm water and when you're done going, squirt the bottle on your stitches and dab clean with toilet paper.
As far as washing, I think you're doing it properly, that's what I did. You can't really help an old blood smell except to use that bottle after using the bathroom to rinse the blood off and change your pad every hour or two.

The bottle they give you at the hospital is meant to be used to lessen stinging as you urinate, and to help you clean after using the toilet. Just fill it with warm water and squirt it on you as you urinate.

As for cleaning - change your pad more often - every 1 to 2 hours if not more frequently - you are likely smelling the pad more than yourself.

A daily shower or bath is sufficient for personal hygiene.

Be patient with yourself, all you need to do clean as usual. You don't have to clean internally, your body has natural hormones to deal with that & change your pads more frequently. Unless you had an episiodomy you might need use the cleansing bottle externally only.
It takes a while for your uterus to contract (4-6 weeks), nursing will enhance contractions. Can you take a sitz bath yet, this would help too.

if you are bleeding for several weeks washing is the least of the problems.
