1) Begin by making a list of subject-headings under which you might expect the subject to be listed.

2) Start a card file using the following forms.

a) Book and magazine article:

i. Subject
ii. Author

iii. Title
iv. Facts of publication

v. Library call number
b) News story:

i. Subject
ii. Facts of publication

iii. Headline
c) Periodicals:

i. Author
ii. Title

iii. Name of periodical
iv. Volume and page number

v. Month and year.

you're supposed to make sure you separate the cards into references first. so like make a reference card for each reference you have and number them. then for your notes from that reference write facts on some cards and label them according to what reference you used.

so lets say i have book A, B, and C. book A would be reference 1. book B would be reference 2 and book C would be reference 3. etc.

notes from A would be labeled Ref. 1 and so forth.

the format for notes doesnt matter. they're notes.
the reference cards should be in bilbliographic format.
so like :
author of the article
title of the article.
chapter its in.
book its in.
authors of book
published
date

Different schools prefer different formats. Usually they give you a booklet with a guide as to their preferences for footnotes and research cards etc. Check to see if they have a booklet with their preferences in it.
