I use all ten fingers as I was taught to touch type & audio type at school before computers. It's like riding a bike once you learn and just comes naturally.
To learn we started with the f and j keys which are the home keys for the index fingers...they have ridges on the keyboard so you know you have the right placing.
The index fingers control the keys on the left- rtfgvb
and on the right-uyjhmn...
and the thumbs the space bar
....forget the numbers for now....if you learn these letters with your index fingers remembering to always bring the fingers back to their home on the f and j keys for reference, you will be half way to learning.
If you write some text down on paper using these letters and then type them in adding a couple at a time, without looking or with only the odd glance you will eventually learn with practise.....
your fingers home keys (the keys where the fingers return after each letter) are.........
LEFT.....pinky=a/ ring=s/middle=d/index =f
RIGHT...pinky=; / ring=l /middle=k/ index=j

I use 5 fingers from my left hand and 3 fingers from my right hand. This because I quited learning typing lesson right in the middle, before section of practicing the little finger and the one next to it.
The only way that you can type faster is to use 10 fingers. You can download practice typing program from Internet and install into your computer. You might feel you are very slow at the beginning (slower then your 2-finger typing), but it is very fast later on. It is take you about one week to practice. And do not use 2-finger typing again.

I learned to type years ago at school with an old fashioned typewriter and a board over my fingers so I couldnt look. How I hated that lesson but I am so grateful as I still use all fingers and thumbs and type pretty fast although I am not sure what my speed actually is. Shame it hasnt improved my spelling though!

I use all 10, that is the way you are supposed to type. I also touch type, as opposed to looking at the keyboard when I am typing.
I learnt it with a CD. Cannot remember the name well, but it was something like Teach yourself Touch Typing, or something like that.
Really it is all about practice and knowing which fingers are meant for which buttons. Just buy yourself a CD that teaches touch typing and off you go. Good luck!

I use all ten fingers. My mom drilled me in typing with the "right fingers" when I was little, so I've had a lot of practice. I don't know how many wpm I type, but people who see me type say I type fast. My mom taught me by putting little colored stickers (red, green, blue, etc.) on my fingers and putting matching colored dots on the computer keyboard with a permanent marker or stickers. Then I just matched the stickers on my fingers with the matching colors on the keyboard, and I could keep track of which fingers I needed to use.

try and use the same keyboard all the time, i can only touch type on my work one that i use 8 hours a day. I use my index finger to space bar, and my right middle finger, then 3 fingers on my left hand... it's what works for you though i guess. can you try one of those teach yourself touch typing courses online? just had a quick check on google and this one is free.

Practice makes perfect. Try running as many conversations as possible at one time on your Messenger program. I can keep about 8 friends on the go without them realising that I'm not giving them my full attention. My head starts hurting before my fingers.
Those split keyboards are useful if you're thinking about learning to touch type, but you can get pretty fast without that training. Unless you're looking to become a special type of secretary, I think you'd be fine without one. The key is practice, practice, practice.

To increase your typing speed you will need to get a typing tutor program and learn to use all of the fingers on both hands. It initially will be slow as you get used to where and which fingers to use for which letters but you should be able to increase your speed exponentially with practice.
