He has never been ridden. How would I train him to move forward without getting on him as he is only 900 high and I'm too heavy.

it sounds like you need to learn how to long rein!!! you walk behind him with too long lunge lines and this will teach him to move forward on his own!!!
have a good read up and teach yourself and ask peeps in your yard to help out!!! look at web sites

How about learning to lunge him? When lunging a horse learns to reconise voice aids, ie walk on, trot on, woa etc. Or even just lead him round, and when you stop say woa/halt loud and clear. To move forward say walk on clearly and then gently encourage him to move forward. Eventually he will learn to associate the word with an action.
