the lines around mean absolute value. an absolute value is the positive.

So, the absolute value of 1 is one, and the absolute value of -1 is 1.

or |1|=1 and |-1|=1

now, you have to find out what value of x would make the equation true. x could be a negative, a positive, or a decimal (but it most likely is a whole number).
