8:30 in the evening, I'm literally broken over after a painfully hectic day. Okay let's watch some news.... I grab that remote, flip through some channels, I see Raju Srivastav in Aaj Tak. For an instant I think: "God! did he meet with an accident?" Later I find he's conducting a comedy session, on Aaj Tak?!? Where did this "guy" get into a high-grade news channel from? Another news channel, Star News tells me about Abhishek and Aishwariya's weding plans, as if the world's coming to an end if it is not informed about their "plans". Okay, taken, let me see that item anyway: "Big B ne 100 karod....blah blah....Sahara Amby Valley mein shaadi...blah blah...dost se hum ne baat ki...." The whole crap goes on for one whole hour (with ofcourse, the Harpic and Rupa underwear ads thrown in). WTF! I spent an hour knowing about their wedding plans? An hour wasted indeed!
Most of us glorify the media as "Thou art our savior" but we don't realise that after doing this, we've developed a sort of an attitude where we simply can't do without them. Gone are the days when we would patiently wait for our copy of Indian Express, flip through the pages, solve the crossword, the HeathCliff comic strip... Life was so easy then. But now, when there's an unforeseen event, we know that Aaj Tak or NDTV would belt out their one hour specials, with each having their own versions of the same story, and we spend hours of our precious time watching them, including their Harpic ads. This flaw in us has been dutifully exploited by media-houses. They now know that when there's something as pointless as "a break-up between Ash and Salman, and that "oh so interesting" phone call to Vivek", people can afford to leave their chores of life and sit down watching a one hour show in it, plus ofcourse, the Harpic ads.
This is how it benifits them....: You see, there's something called TRP, a rating that is used to benchmark the number of people watching a channel. When a channel has more TRP, it means that more people watch it. So if I place my ad in that channel, it has a wider impact base, naturally I sell my client's product better. The catch is, when the TRP of a channel is high, the people who run the channel, increase the tariffs for the ads and increase their income. Now how to they increase that TRP? Simple. Show something the viewers like, and they're glued to their channel. Housewives today, are "finally" getting bored of watching KKKKKKekta KKKKapoor's KKKKrappy soaps, that "saas, bahu, konspiracy, krap". So what does a typical matric-pass, small town housewife (who barely understands politics) watch? Nat Geo? Nyaaah! She'd rather watch about what Abhishek has been upto, or some "really pathetic, hardly funny" Raju Srivastav jokes on Aaj Tak. Media houses realize that when the husbands are away slogging their butts out, you have these "millions" of housewives watching TV. So it is a good idea showing "wedding plans" and selling Harpic.
On a much serious note, I admit, that some channels like NDTV and Aaj Tak have done a truly...good job in exposing the misdeeds of our "utopian" government., Exposing some serious things like the one hour show on crime, exposing babus taking bribes, I salute the way NDTV covered the whole Nithari issue and the way the UP govt, mishandled it. But the same channel ironically, now shows ads of "UP mein jurm kamm hai...crap". I'd rather watch Harpic than something are stupid as that! How dumb of NDTV.
However there's a much more serious issue, of editors prioritizing on some items while neglecting others:
I felt really sad (and angry) about the Jessica Lall issue, for one or two days I've been seeing the "Justice for Jess...." thing but what's this? The same issue is being telecasted for a month in succession! Every day of my life begins with something or the other about Jessica in the breakfast news. And this sort of totally changed my attitude towards Jessica and NDTV. At the end of it, I totally lost all sympathy I had for her. NDTV shows about Jessica for a month, neglecting some more serious issues like minor-prostitution in Andhra Pradesh.....this beats logic. NDTV basically wanted to pump up their TRP, earn money thru the SMS for Jessica thing, evoke sympathy in the viewers who're fed up of politics. "Jessica went to the wrong place, met the wrong people, didn't oblige to a (bada baap ka ladka) and got herself killed" AND NOT "Oh! please shed tears, she got murdered" makes sense to me. She fell into a bear pit she was aware of, and complained that the bears had claws.
At the end of the day, love it or hate it, we can't do without the media. Just that we have to make do with all the crap (and Harpic ads) and watch what we want, and choose what we want to watch.
By the way, there are no TVs on K-Pax, there something called TTP (thought transfer protocol) which transmits news to us in our thoughts. And yes... We don't have Harpic ads there. Hee Hee.

well, it depends in what context
certain matters such as the Nithari klillings need to be sensationalised cos they effect a lot of us... such things are just so big!
on d other hand, things like some1 slapping greg need not go into primetime.
its basically cos of d new channel wars: ndtv vs ibn vs. times now and ndtv india vs. india tv vs aaj tak
ever1 wants better TRPs. so many channels tend to deviate from d point. e.g.: Star News, perhaps India's WORST news channel
all d same, that's all u get in India. and i would still watch NDTV 24x7, even with the sensationalisation. after all, they do report some great stuff (like the special Republic of Hunger series)
