Search engines fill in a gap in the Internet, as it (the Internet) was created without a 'directory', or 'yellow pages', if you like. Search engines troll through web pages automatically and create indexes on words it finds.

Browsers are the standard software used to view content on the internet. Because there is so much content out there, search engines make it easier to find what you are looking for.

The Internet is accessed through an IPO (Cox, Juno) which allows your bowser (Internet Explorer, Netscape) to access a search engine (yahoo, google)
