I am curious about others' opionions on this. A friend from another culture felt that it is the man's job to protect and provide for his family, but also controlling the family including the wife helped reinforce his masculinity. What characteristics reinforce masculinity in American culture? In other words what do Americans feel makes a man a man?

Well it's the whole "being on top" situation. Men like to be incontrol. In the buisness(spelling is bad) world you are more likely to see a man be CEO or chairman of a company over a female. Who usuaslly gets the bonus first when it comes to pay raise? Men. Nothing to be done, it's just that there is a mind set of men running evrything and they are in control. Now the women who have this power are extrodinary! They usually become famous for it. Like the woman who was chairman of 20th centruary fox, and was ceo(or president, can't remember) of paramount pictures. Even the women who have made to become supreme justices. The first lady, even though the pres is in "power," the first lady is usually the one running things from the background.

I think some characteristics are; showing no fear, being the "protector", having an extremely high level of confidence, and taking no disrespect from anyone.
