I am a psychology major, and I have wanted to be a psychologist all my life; however, I am now considering the possibility of becoming a writer. I think I might like to write fictional novels and short stories, but I have no idea what kinds of things I would like to write about! How does an author go about choosing a storyline, characters, etc.? Does it just pop into one's head? I certainly hope not, because my head is NOT popping! Any ideas would be very helpful.

Most authors write about what they know, their interest and likes.

What made you interested in psychology ? Maybe write a murder mystery. With the major you have, you could incorporate that into your story. Give real facts maybe explaining what mental disorders the killer has, what makes him tick. Have your hero/heroine be a psychologist and use that to help the police track the killer.

Just a thought. :)

You also need to take creative writing classes. They will help you understand how to form stories. Also will help broaden your interest.

Write, write, write, write, write.

Join a writers' group. Most places will have one for beginners.

I've written a review about great books for writers on my Web site. The link to that page is in the resource box below. I think you'll like the one by Rico.

I also highly recommend the Long Ridge Writing Group. The courses are tutored by award-winning writers. I graduated from one of their courses and had published my first article before I completed the course. It's excellent.

Write even when you don't have anything to write about. For me, I have no idea where it's going. For others, they take a more formal approach. They create outlines and character sketches. Personally, when things are going well I'm just taking dictation. The characters are telling me their story.

Working in psychology will give you more insight into the human condition that you could ever imagine. Since I am the keeper of secrets, people tell me their stories and it gets stored in my subconscious.

But that's just my approach.
