What will you be using it for? Just school work? Just word processing and email? Then I would go with Dell I am happy with my Latitude it is older but I plan not to up grade it to any PC model for at least a year and a half unless it dies.....

Photos and multimedia?
Go with a Mac Power book. you don't need a pro unless you are doing things professionally. With the dual platform it can do anything the Pro just affords you the ability to do things bigger better and faster made for the multimedia professional.

I would stick with one of the top names:
Dell, HP, Toshiba.
You can always get help.
I'm partial to Dell, but don't buy the latitude series.

apple - give the mac a try its really great
dell - good quality and price
acer - very good but check on battery life - those dual turions
fujitso-siemens - excellent quality - graphics not state of the art
hp - somewhat with-out-personality laptops
