Was it the wrist pin or the valves? It could have been either or. Was it a "knocking" noise or a "tapping" noise? Either way, if its the wrist pin its gonna cost!!
A new engine will run you approxiatmately $2500 and up. To rebuild all depends on what you want to do to the engine while its out and how bad its tore up inside, a basic rebuild will run approxiamately $1500 and up.
My advice to you is to get a second opinion or sell it. It may cost you alittle but it will be worth the effort if you like the car.

Yes a wrist pin is a job that requires a tear down. You may get a second opinion. Usually this is not a part that is the first to go on a engine. A collapsed lifter or worn out camshaft,or broken rocker arm will make a constant sound level -just faster or slower with engine rpm. A wrist pin will get louder when you are at speed and you let off the gas. A main bearing or rod bearing will get real loud when accelerating.
I hope this helps.

If is is a wrist pin it will require a lot of work to replace it. While the engine is apart, you may want to replace any other worn parts. If this engine is aged and used parts are available it may be easier and cheaper to replace the whole engine. Get a second opinion, because it maybe easier and cheaper to replace the whole car

If its just a wrist pin, then no he is trying to screw you over. Although it is a VERY expensive job. They have disconnect EVERYTHING in the car, take the engine block out, take off the intake manifold, the valvehead (if it has one) the camhead. Then if the piston created a taper, they are going to have to oversize (re-bore) the cylinder. Then purchase a new piston, new piston rings, new wrist pin. Thats worse case scenario. If the pin is just loose, and it wasn't been so for very long, they can just go inside, replace the pin. I don't know why the whole engine would need to be rebuilt. My guess is that he/she is pulling your chain. Find an honest mechanic.

Agree, could be a stuck lifter or just a spark knock. I've always used Marvels Mystery Oil when I got a stuck lifter. For the knock, fill up with a high octane fuel if it wont damage your engine (ie aluminum block engines like honda).
If the mechanic is saying the engine needs to be replaced, then trying these things first can't do much more harm.

I would get a second opinion first. I've never heard of a wrist pin causing knocking, if it did the cylinder is already scrap, because the retaining clip had to have come loose and is rattling around inside the cylinder. Check the lifter and push rods and also the timing chain.

the sunshine flickering skill the oil tension is low at idle. in all probability using wiped out bearings on the rods and mains. camshaft bushings will additionally placed on and reason tension loss. with each and all of the placed on and tear i'm gonna wager that the noise you're listening to is a knocking sort of noise. that must be the bearings being worn superb out and according to danger desinagrated on a variety of of connecting rods inflicting the rod to hammer on the crankshaft. it gets louder as you pass swifter and quieter as you decelerate..if undesirable sufficient will reason stalling. this would be what's oftentimes a blown engine..you want a sparkling one. of coarse, it is in basic terms hypothesis as you have not advised us what variety of noise that's. examples: grinding, knocking, whining, popping, damn and so on.

It sounds like your rockers are hitting, Either way... You'll be ripping the engine apart (lots of labor) or replacing the entire engine, which would be cheaper

I'd get a second opinion! It could be any number of things. Low oil or lifters especially.
