Why is it that whenever anything bad happens people's first thoughts are often about compensation?

Why can't people accept that sometimes no-one is to blame for an accident and sometimes things just happen... by accident... not because someone was negligent?

My husband had a serious accident at work just over 2 years ago, believe it or not the first people to mention anything to him about compensation were the nurses at A&E, he was more interested about the damage he'd suffered than the money he might get.

Because people look at it as an easy way to make some money. I guess it's easier to blame someone else for something happening than realizing that **** happens, or that it was their OWN fault in the first place.

I think that it is a mixture of greed, selfishness and a failure to accept some of the blame in some instances. I am reminded of the dreadful attitude of Heather MIlls in this one.

Because the world we nowe live in is geared around greed,people seem more intent on what they can make from something rather than putting things in perspective and helping others,sad but true.

Because we are no longer taught to be accountable for our own actions, and to take responsibility means it is your own fault when you fail - and who wants that kind of weight on their shoulders? plus suing is seen as a legitimate path to wealth.
Look at large divorce settlements, reality TV contestants - other examples of 'entitlement mentality'

This is just another symptom of US culture invading the UK. Over there if it moves sue it. If it stands still bulldoze it.

because it makes the compensator feel like they are doing something, and the compensatee feel a bit better.

also, there is money to be had in a lawsuit-happy society.
