Recently, we had a power outage, which we had prior warning of.

Thinking I was being clever, I stuck our phone system onto a UPS, and attached it to a generator, thinking it would keep our phone system running (that being the lifeblood of our business)

It didn't work. Every time the generator spiked, the UPS went to battery mode, I could hear it every few seconds 'clicking'

Is there anyway I could get around this problem, as I know it will happen again. The UPS I used was an APC Smart-Ups 1500

Check the generator output voltage and frequency. You may need to make some minor adjustments at the speed controller or the output voltage regulator.

If the UPS is expecting exactly 120V@60Hz any fluctuations will cause it to activate. Look for DIP switches on back. Sometimes you can lower the activation voltage or widen the acceptable frequency limits.

Get a Kill-A-Watt meter to check the generator output.

Have a look at other items on my generator page.
