If you got a Laparoscopy done, did you feel the tube that they put in your mouth to help you breathe? I know they said they do it when you're sleeping but do you feel it or when you wake up can you?

The tube that anesthesia puts in your airway during surgery is for intubation during the surgery. You are completely UNAWARE that this is being done. You are already "asleep" with the medication they have given you thru your I.V..
You also do not feel it when you wake up either. They extubate (pull out the tube) as you are waking up. They also administer medications to cause amnesia (so you don't remember). I have worked in surgery for 12 years. You may have a slight throat irritation (like a mild sore throat) post-op; but you definately will not remember being intubated/extubated.
Also a note: After a laparoscopic procedure, you may experience deferred shoulder pain post-op. This is pain caused from the CO2 (gas) they use to insuflate ("blow-up") your belly for the procedure so they can see into your abdomen/pelvis with the laparoscope. Ask your doc to try to get out as much of this CO2 right after the procedure as possible to minimize this discomfort.
Good luck with your surgery...you'll do fine! :)

i'm having my 4th laparoscopy done next week. i am quite used to these things, but since this is your first time, i will give u the lowdown.

1) when you get to the hospital, you will sign in

2) you'll prolly wait in the waiting room for at least 30-40 minutes

3) you'll go into the pre-op room, and strip down to get in your gown

4) they'll weigh you, take your blood pressure

5) you will pee in a cup, and probably have blood drawn

6) they will ask you a million questions about your health, family history etc.

7) they'll put the IV needle in you (most likely in your hand which in my experience HURT LIKE HELL and causes a bad bruise, by the way they say the pain is supposed to go away after the first prick, but the skin on the top of my hands is so thin, that i had a bad constant ache the entire time)

8) then the anesthesiologist will come in, and ask you the same questions you just got done answering for the nurse lol

9) then about an hr (seemingly) after that, they will wheel you into surgery

10) when you are in the op room, you will be placed on the table while still coherent

11) they will begin talking to you, while they administer the anesthesia, and they will be asking you all kinds of nonsense questions (they really dont care what your answers are, they just want you to keep talking until you cant anymore).

12) when you wake up, you will have a very dry, sore throat

13) your shoulders may hurt really bad from the lap gas

14) your abdomen and pelvis will be pretty sore, but nothing some vicodin cant cure

15) you will be kept in the post-op room until you urinate, eat something and drink something (without throwing it up) and can walk ok with some help.

16) if you cant do all those things, you will prolly spend the night in the hospital, so you can be monitored to make sure you are ok.

17) the nurse will check your incisions to make sure no infection is starting up

18) your IV and any other monitor stuff will be removed off your body.

19) you will have one last temp and blood pressure check

20) you will be given the instructions for taking care of yourself, as well the prescription(s) to take to the pharmacy for pain meds and such

21) you will sign release papers stating that you understand your instructions, and will probably be given a date for a follow-up appointment so your dr can make sure you are ok, and healing good.

22) you will be free to go! make sure when you get home you get plenty of rest, and you will prolly be allowed to go back to work the next day, as long as you are on light duty, and dont do anything too strenuous.

Good Luck! I know you'll do just fine!

i had a laparoscopy last year, i was in an out of hospital in a day and from the moment i was put to sleep i do not remember anythin till i woke up in the recovery room in which they had already taken the tube out! i felt fairly drousy and like the other lady explains i did have alot of shoulder pain from the gas that they put in side you so i suggest you get some gaviscon as this will help ease the pain! my stomach was tender and bloated for a couple of days and i did have a very dry throat after the op but all in all it was a very quick procedure and quick recovery!
good luck hun you will be fine!
