one and a half to two times your age, in thousands, would be a good salary I reckon. That's not to say you couldn't be very happy indeed on a lot less, but as a concept, it's one I'm trying to work towards!

It depends on where you live as a London wage up North would be amazing.

Also, it doesn't matter because you will always live to your means. Just means you'll have a bigger house, faster car and more takeaways on a larger salary. At the end of the day, the guy driving a Lada owns it and the guy driving a Porsche is trying to keep up with the hire purchase payments on it.

I'm self employed and anything over £20,000 is OK for for me because the wife is in full time employment.

When it comes to what is acceptable income, geography is everything. What may be considered a substantial salary in Boise, Idaho may be considered poverty level in San Francisco.

Living in San Diego, I have come to the sad realization that if one does not bring in 6 figures, one can soon expect to live under a bridge.

£30k would be a decent wage for 2adults and 2kids on a mortgage and a car in my circumstances, but we survive on £20k. If we did have £30k then my partner and I wouldn't need to watch how much we're spending but then we'd probably buy higher class items than the ones we do. It all depends on your circumstances and the cost of living of where you live.

Simple - one that covers all you need to cover - if you are living on 10k a year and are earning 11k you're laughing. Depends on what you want to make you happy, there's no ideal.

For what ?

For getting onto the property ladder in the UK, I guess it would need to be around £50,000.
