We are thinking of booking a day trip to Yosemite from San Francisco. From the many trips available I am quite taken by the one which uses the Amtrak from Emeryville for the first leg of the journey.

Has anyone taken this trip? If so, how long is it overall and how long does it actually give you in Yosemite National Park?

I only have a few days in San Francisco on a visit from the UK but would love to see Yosemite as it looks fantastic, can anyone recommend this or any similar excursion?

- The tour buses are the worse way to do Yosemite (7:00 - 22:00). Usually, they give you only 2 hours inside the park. Due to their large size, the conditions are not very comfortable and a great deal of time is spent waiting for your fellow travellers. They're not particularly accomodating when it comes to deviations to the schedule... no matter how minor.

- Amtrak is a better option (7:30 to 22:00). You'll have roughly three hours inside the park. And the trains have comfortable seating arrangements with electricity for laptops/DVD players. However, the Dining Car is really just a snack bar with microwaved burgers and sodas. It's best to bring your own food.

- Another good option, if you want to maximize your time inside the park, is to go on a van tour (6:15 to 21:00). This will give you 3 to 4 hours of free time because vans are faster than either the buses or the trains. And the group's small size of 5-6 max. means the guides will be happier and more flexible.

Yosemite is reachable by a variety of transportation options. Amtrak is a good option to the gateway city of Merced but from there the YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transit System) bus service will take you into the park for far less cost than the tour packages and allows for greater flexibility once in the park.

i imagine it will be loopy to attempt to make sure Yosemite in an afternoon and then rigidity decrease back. it really is 3.5 hours to the western gate of the park and then yet another hour into the valley the position the excursion starts. pondering the time fed on on the shape to get there, the costs and the jiffy left to stay there its in simple terms no longer worth it. Your wager wager will be to spend the nighttime interior the park or in Groveland or El Portal and then rigidity decrease back the subsequent day

I've taken Amtrak to Tahoe from Martinez.. Amtrak is okay.. not the fastest mode of transportation. Contact Amtrak.. via their 800 number and ask. They should have all that information available. If you can afford a rental car.. It would be faster.
