He has an 82 IQ (below average), reads at a 1st grade level, and likes to get out of class by whinning about how he feels sick or tired. He also lacks social skills because he's a 14 year old who acts like he's 8. When he is suspended, he likes it, so he tries to get suspended from school by skipping class. What can I do to get him to stay in class? I know reinforcers work, but is there anything else?

I'm a psychologist at the school, and I have talked to this student's father. The problem is the father agrees with his son (which is normal I guess) and so if his son says a teacher is mean to him at school, the father gets all upset and immediately wants to homeschool him.

At this point, it would take a miracle to catch up to 9th grade reading level. First, the student would have to be willing and motivated to make it happen....you don't have that. Second, it would take the father's encouragement, support and cooperation to join the team to make it happen...you don't have that either. Lastly, it would take several years of one-on-one training with a reading teacher to keep him on the path until he reaches his age level....you probably can't afford to provide that.

So, your only alternative is to take up the father's suggestion and let him home school his child. That will place the student in a favorable position, in his eyes, while removing him from the classroom where he has caused poor examples and negative impact.

After all, don't the parents of a troubled child ALWAYS know what's best for their child?

a little late to be trying to remove bad habits but your best bet is to make sure that his time out of school is worse than the time in school, so if he gets suspended make him work around the house, make him do a book report and give him math problems to solve. DO NOT let him play video games or watch TV or surf the net. and take away those priveledges for the entire month that he gets suspended.
