I am pregnant at 37 weeks now and have a question about what kind of labor pain is worse, the abdominal/stomach pain, or the back pain? In Lamaze class, the only pain our instructor talked about was abdominal pain saying it starts out from the top of uterus or fundus and spreads lower and everywhere until the perineum and on the thighs as well too. She never mentioned back pain labor. What is worse and why?
Does having some soothing or religious music help in the room while the mom is in labor and delivery? Does it help to take the mind off the pain and breathe and listen to the music?

Another quick question to add to this, when during the final weeks of labor, before it's onset, does the baby stop moving down there? I means right now at 37 weeks I can constantly feel my bladder and about more than an inch down below there that the baby is moving every second? Does this mean I am close to labor or have more time? He has to be stationed or completely still in order to progress right? I am 70% effaced and as of last week I was 1 cm dialated also and his head was already down!

Okay hun, here it goes from a mother of 3 and one on the way.

First of all during labor you are going to have both. You can't really have one without the other. In the beginning your back will ache and your stomach will be sore and the pain increases in both areas. The baby will be moving until you are ready to deliver. I feel that the back pain in labor is horrible. Although if your child cooperates and faces the right way it won't be as bad. (I forgot if face up or face down is the right way to come out, it's been almost 4 years) The abdominal pain is not fun either. Imagine the worst period cramps time a million and that's what your hard core contractions will feel like. (I'm trying not to scare you but it's the truth) As far as music, it depends on what methods help you relax and be calm. If music is your thing then go ahead and bring it with you. If you prefer to concentrate on a picture of something soothing, try that. Breathing techniques are important, just remember to breath slowly. Make sure you husband rubs your back and be specific with him, that always helped me. Try a tennis ball to add more pressure.

I wish you the best of luck!

hi. i'm an ob.specialist, when labour painstarts, there is the radiating pain from the fundus spreading down , due to the alternate contractions and relaxation of what is known as the first stage of labor; later on as the baby reaches the birth canal, it has to be pushed out with strong bearing down pains, when the pain is also felt in the back . since you have had counselling , your nurse or obsterician will help you with some pain killing drugs or epidural if need be .alternatively, you may like to bear the pains and experience the natrural birth process . soothing music, does help to reieve the pain ., all the best for a natural delivery.!!

I'm also pregnant for the first time and am 36 weeks, but my mom is a labor and delivery nurse. She says back labor is worse. I have also heard that epidurals don't help back labor as much as front labor (my sister told me this....she had a lot of back labor).

I had back labor with my second son, it was *awful*. The first was a piece of cake (reg. front labor) compared to my second. I got the epideral and it was all good after that.

WHEW. BACK LABOR IS MUCH, MUCH, MUCH WORSE!!! I HAVE EXPERIENCED BOTH AND I'D RATHER DELIVER TEN BABIES WITH ABDOMINAL PAIN THAN ONE MORE WITH BACK PAIN.

GRANTED, ONCE IT WAS OVER, IT WAS WELL WORTH IT. BUT IF I HAD MY CHOICE IN THE MATTER.......

MY MOTHER WAS MY COACH WITH MY FIRST DELIVERY, AND I HAD MUSIC PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND, BUT I DON'T REALLY REMEMBER IT. WHAT I DO REMEMBER THOUGH, IS THAT SHE "FANNED" ME THE WHOLE TIME. I WAS BURNING UP. SHE CONTINUOUSLY WIPED MY HEAD AND NECK WITH A COOL RAG, AND SHE FANNED ME WITH A PIECE OF CARDBOARD. GOD LOVE THAT WOMAN!!!

MY HUSBAND WAS WITH ME FOR THE SECOND ONE.........AND ALL I REMEMBER IS HOW MUCH I WANTED MY MAMA BACK IN THERE. (HE WASN'T VERY MUCH HELP..)

CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!
