It's not easy but it can be done. This link will tell you how, step by step.

Kelly, I got the same problem myself! It will only let me transfer the tunes I bought from itunes and not the ones which I copied from my Cd's. I e-mailed Apple and they said it can't be done but that probably just cos they won't make any money from it. Gonna watch this question with interest or I'll lose 30 hours of Cd's!.

Just tried the first guy's advice. It really isn't easy. Think I'm just gonna have to sit down one Sunday and do it all over again.

You have to set your iTunes to manual download. I found the easiest way is to search for "manual upload" on your iTunes help and it will talk you through changing it to manual. This means that you can manually put songs from your iTunes onto your iPod, but it will not auto sync them so you lose anything that is on your Ipod but not your iTunes.

Once the change is made, it stays made. I had to do this too and found the iTunes help the easiest way.
