Where did Comedy begin?

I was interested in researching the history of comedy and writing something on it. Where would you suggest I start such a quest?

Shortly after the discovery of fire in prehistoric times. Thog placed some mammoth dung wrapped in fern leaves at the entrance to Ug's cave. He lit the leaves and then threw a rock into Ug's cave. The rest is history.
