Talk to local talent agencies in your area. I did this in high school. I'm in a couple of Winn-Dixie training films. I'm in an old Burt Wolf Winn-Dixie commercial. And I'm in the background of one of Ted Turner's made for TV movies. I also had a speaking role in a local commercial for a TV news special.

It was a lot of fun and for high school it paid pretty well. I worked on the training film for about 8 hours and got $130 (after the agent's cut) in 1989. That wasn't too bad for a day I thought.

Often the production company will run ads in the paper for the location where they will be filming. Sometimes they will hire someone on the spot right before a scene, if they look right for the part.If there is a film crew in the area, dress appropriately for the period the film covers and show up, and you might get a part as an extra.
If the film si set in the lat 1950's and you have a nice restored 56 Chevy, you might get hired to drive your car.
I know one guy that got hired as an extra simply because he was wear ing a 3-peice suit.
